The drivetrain isolates from the suspension, and the rear wheel moves freely through every hit. Pawls retract the moment you stop pedaling, and the drag that slows you down is gone. The ratchet buzzing noise disappears, leaving only the sound of tires on the trail.

What is Pedal Kickback?

It's what you've been fighting without knowing it. Every time your suspension compresses, your chain pulls back. Every time your chain pulls back, your pedals kick back, and your rear end stiffens up. It happens on every bike. The harshness you blamed on your shock. The dead feeling when things got rough. None of it is your imagination. It's pedal kickback. Your bike was designed to be better than this; it just never got to prove it.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

Six
Things
You’ll
Love

01 TUNABILITY

The Ride You Want. When You Want It.

The pawl-pusher makes the deadband adjustable between 9°, 13°, and 18° without tools. Tune it to your bike's kinematics, your terrain, and your preference. Find your setting once and the hub delivers it consistently, ride after ride. Change it at the trailhead when the track changes; quickly and without tools.

02 SUSPENSION PERFORMANCE

Your bike, as designed

With the drivetrain isolated from the suspension, your bike and rear shock behave the way the engineer intended. Smooth and predictable in any terrain, at any speed, even under heavy braking. Efficient, predictable suspension delivers better traction, more control, and the confidence to push harder.

03 FREE SPEED

Speed you carry without pedaling.

Freehub pawls are fully disengaged during coasting, so the drag that slows a conventional hub simply isn't there. Lab testing shows an 88.5% reduction in freehub mechanism drag compared to leading competitors. On the trail, that's speed you carry into and out of every feature without working for it.

04 A QUIET RIDE

Your tires. The trail. Nothing else.

With the pawls disengaged from the drivetrain during coasting and chain slap reduced, your bike becomes whisper quiet. The ratchet buzz is gone because the source of the sound is gone. What replaces it is an immersive experience that connects you more directly to the terrain under your wheels.

05 LESS HARSHNESS

Calm through the pedals.

Kickback from chain tension dies inside the Sidekick freehub's deadband before it can reach the cranks. No kickback. No harshness through the pedals. Just a calm, stable platform underfoot on the roughest sections of trail.

06 LESS FATIGUE

Outlast the trail.

As your bike works more efficiently to absorb impacts, your legs and body work less. Control and comfort increase. Fatigue drops. The result is longer rides, the confidence to push hard on the longest tracks, and noticeably better body positioning through the bottom of a run.

THE HUB

Inside Sidekick 2.0

01

PAWL PUSHER SYSTEM

A spring and magnet-actuated pawl pusher inside the freehub retracts the pawls from the ratchet the instant you stop pedaling. The durable magnetic retraction system replaces delicate springs found in conventional hubs, delivering consistent performance over thousands of hours of riding.

02

BEARINGS & SEALS

High-grade bearings and upgraded seals with minimized axial preload reduce drag by a further 30% over the original Sidekick, making these the fastest hubs we've ever tested. Extended seal life means longer intervals between service.

03

TOOL-FREE MAINTENANCE

Captive thread endcaps allow tool-free removal for cleaning and maintenance. No workshop required. The freehub body pops off in seconds, giving full access to internals on the trail or at the trailhead.

04

ADJUSTABLE DEADBAND

A tool-free pawl-pusher lets riders fine-tune the hub's feel trailside. Sidekick and Pro hubs offer 9°, 13°, and 18° settings, from snappy engagement for climbing to maximum kickback absorption for descending. Sidekick GR hubs use 12°, 15°, and 18° settings optimized for gravity and E-MTB.

05

17MM ALLOY AXLE

Oversized 17mm aluminum axles in Sidekick and Sidekick Pro hubs increase stiffness while reducing weight. Sidekick GR hubs use reinforced steel axles built for the demands of downhill, enduro, and E-MTB.

Deadband mechanism
0°

Trail, AM

Fast engagement, kickback absorbed at stroke entry

The most-requested addition. The 9° setting delivers snappy, traditional-feeling pedal engagement while still eliminating kickback at the beginning of travel. Optimized for trail and all-mountain bikes that often feature more anti-squat geometry and stand to benefit even more from Sidekick's isolation.

AM, Enduro, E-MTB

Balanced, the ideal default for most riding

The balanced setting that defined the original Sidekick. A wide enough deadband to deliver significant suspension isolation across most of the travel range, while maintaining engagement that feels natural and predictable under power. The go-to for enduro racing, aggressive all-mountain riding, and lightweight E-MTB applications.

E-MTB, Downhill, Gravity

Maximum suspension isolation, most chainless feel

Maximum isolation. The widest deadband creates the most pronounced chainless sensation on descents. Your suspension moves completely freely, the bike carries speed effortlessly, and drivetrain feedback virtually disappears. Built for bike parks, gravity riding, and riders who prioritize descending performance above all else.

Sidekick GR uses a different range: 12° / 15° / 18° for gravity applications.

FAQ

QUESTIONS. ANSWERED.

Yes, all Sidekick hubs are E-MTB rated and handle the higher torque demands of motor-assisted drivetrains. The Sidekick GR is specifically well suited for E-MTB applications. Sidekick's isolation addresses motor torque pulses directly, while the near-silent operation eliminates motor-amplified drivetrain clatter.
Both deliver the full Sidekick experience: anti-kickback, near-zero drag, and near-silent operation. The Pro upgrades to EZO driver bearings and TPX hub shell bearings, adds nickel-plated pawls and pusher, and is available in a Straight Pull configuration. The Straight Pull Pro at 275g is the lightest hub in the lineup.
Straight Pull spokes eliminate the J-bend at the hub flange, reducing weight and removing a common stress point. They offer a stiffer, lighter build for trail and all-mountain where weight matters most. J-bend spokes are more universally available, easier to source as replacements, and offer more flexibility for custom builds.
Yes, and short-travel bikes often benefit even more. Many trail and all-mountain frames have higher anti-squat values and more aggressive kickback geometry, meaning Sidekick's isolation has a more pronounced effect. The 9° deadband setting keeps engagement familiar while still delivering full benefits.
The 9° setting offers the fastest engagement; ideal for trail and all-mountain riders wanting a traditional feel. The 13° is the balanced all-conditions benchmark. The 18° maximizes suspension isolation for gravity and E-MTB. All settings are tool-free and can be changed trailside.
Significantly less. Sidekick's pawls retract completely during coasting, creating essentially zero parasitic drag from the freehub mechanism. Sidekick 2.0 reduces drag by a further 30% over the original, and shows at least 55% less drag than competing hubs in controlled tests.
It's real and measurable. At 15 mph, a hub with 1° of engagement can engage over 1,000 times per second. Each instance is an opportunity for the freehub to engage and transmit force back through the drivetrain into the suspension. The cumulative effect is a stiffer, less active rear end, reduced traction, and increased rider fatigue.
Slow engagement hubs have a larger degree window before locking in, but engagement can happen at any point within that range. A 10° hub could cause kickback at 0.5° or 6°, and with hundreds of engagements per second while coasting, kickback remains significant. Sidekick fully disengages the drivetrain, guaranteeing a consistent deadband every time.
Deadband adjustment and most routine maintenance are tool-free and designed for home or trailside service. The hub is fully rebuildable, and all Sidekick 2.0 hubs come with a 10-year warranty against manufacturer defects.
